The Gulf Savannah country, west of Cairns, is another exciting region for the keen bird watcher. Habitats include savannah, savannah woodland, extensive freshwater lagoons and billabongs, palm forests, sand-stone escarpments, mangroves, estuarine and the inter-tidal zone.
Masked, Long-tailed, Zebra, Star, Crimson and Gouldian Finches, Pictorella Mannikin, Purple-crowned and Variegated Fairy-wrens, Northern Rosella, Varied Lorikeet, Budgerigar, Cockatiel, Sandstone Shrike-thrush, Flock Bronzewing, Spinifex Pigeon, Diamond Dove, Red-backed Kingfisher, Spotted Nightjar, Ground Cuckoo-shrike, Buff-sided Robin, Grey-fronted, Grey-headed, Yellow-tinted, Red-headed, White-gaped Honeyeaters etc….
In addition, we have seen some interesting waterfowl on the lagoons, including Pink-eared and Shoveler Duck and the rare Freckled Duck.
